Independent Custody Visiting is a statutory function of the SPA. It is the system of random unannounced visits by trained members of the community to police stations where people are detained to ensure that their human rights are being observed. Visitors monitor detainees treatment and the conditions in which they are detained. Visitors are independent of both the SPA and the police. No experience is needed as training is provided. The volunteers need to be at least 18 years of age. All travel and out of pocket expenses are paid. Visits are carried out regularly with no set days or times.
