Scottish Parliament scrutiny of Electoral Boundaries Regulations

SHARE

The Local Government, Housing and Planning Committee at the Scottish Parliament is considering draft laws on changes to how communities are represented in six council areas.  These local authorities all contain inhabited islands and are:

  • Highland Council
  • Argyll and Bute Council
  • North Ayrshire Council
  • Shetland Islands Council
  • Orkney Islands Council
  • Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council)

The Committee has created this survey to hear views on the suggested changes:

The deadline for taking part is 13th September 2021.  Responses which are sent after this may not be looked at by the Committee.

Background:

The Islands (Scotland) Act 2018 says Boundaries Scotland must look at the boundaries for the six councils. Boundaries Scotland made suggestions to the Scottish Government in 2021.  The final reports and suggestions for each council area can be accessed by the links below:

Legislation:

The Scottish Government cannot amend or reject the suggestions from Boundaries Scotland.  The Scottish Government has created draft laws which can be accessed by the links below:

The Committee will consider the draft laws before suggesting to Parliament what action it should take.
