Orkney Wheels started in 2022, it was created by husband-and-wife team, Daniel and Charlotte. Daniel wanted to share his love for wheeled sports with others and the two decided to invite others to join their sessions at Pickaquoy Centre. The group quickly grew and they now have a dedicated group who come along to the Sunday Sessions. The group ranges from a 2-year-old to someone in their fifties and all abilities are welcome.
Charlotte is the treasurer of Orkney Wheels and is passionate about helping the group grow. She said:
The role of treasurer is easier than I had expected. I was initially worried about taking on the role but there is a lot of information, advice and help available. Whether that is online or a chat with someone at VAO, there is support out there. If you can apply for a mortgage, you can be a treasurer!
Orkney Wheels received wide-ranging support from VAO from an initial conversation about the best legal structure for the group to advice about the different funding opportunities available to them. The group has now converted into a SCIO and become a registered charity. Charlotte said:
OSCR were so helpful when we were applying to become a SCIO, we had phone conversations with them, and they guided us throughout the process.
Orkney Wheels have been working on making the Skate Park in Kirkwall more user friendly and trustees have given it a spring clean in time for the summer.
The future looks bright for Orkney wheels, they will be launching a new website soon and looking ahead, hope to allow more people to try and enjoy wheeled sports.
