Gemma had always enjoyed volunteering and knew that she wanted to find a way to support the Orkney Blide Trust having seen the amazing work they do for mental health in the local community. When she then saw an advertisement on social media looking for new board members she took her opportunity to get involved in the charity.
Gemma officially joined the Orkney Blide Trust board in May 2024. Talking about the application process, Gemma said:
It was a fairly simple process - I emailed to express interest in the role via VAO's volunteering opportunities webpage, the Blide Trust's Service Director then got in touch with an application form for me to complete and I was then asked to attend an interview, which was a great opportunity to gain more information about 'The Blide', what being a board member entailed, and I could ask any questions I had.
As a board member, Gemma attends regular meetings to discuss everything happening at Orkney Blide Trust. The Service Director provides an update on all services and the board are informed of any issues arising. Their main goal is to ensure that all services are provided with the needs of those who use them in mind.
Gemma also volunteers on the reception from time to time, which has proven to be a great opportunity for her to meet the people joining their services who they call 'Blide members' and get to know them.
Talking about her role, Gemma said:
The Blide is a well-established organisation, with strong leadership and a cohesive team. As a volunteer, I help to support both staff and Blide members by providing a listening ear and covering reception to enable staff to focus on the member's needs. By engaging directly with them both, I help create a supportive and inclusive environment
Gemma is also able to raise awareness of the charity through her professional role as a nurse at the Balfour.
Volunteering has provided Gemma with an insight into how valuable local charities are to the people of Orkney. It has also deepened her understanding of mental health, improved her communication and empathy skills, and strengthened her knowledge on the importance of taking time and being present for someone in crisis.
Most importantly volunteering has given Gemma a sense of fulfilment, knowing she can help to make a difference in people’s lives.
