Stromness Museum is one of Scotland’s oldest museums founded in 1837. It is a charitable trust and features collections of natural, local, and maritime history. The museum is accredited to Museum Galleries Scotland and attracts over 12,000 paying visitors per year. Annual turnover exceeds £100,000 pa. A small employed team are overseen by a group of volunteer Trustees.

The Treasurer ensures that Trustees receive accurate reports of the financial status of the organisation at all times. In addition to bookkeeping the Treasurer will supervise budget forecasts and monitor performance.

The post uses XERO accounting software (training arranged). There will be extensive contact with outside funding agencies. Reporting requirements include monthly statements, annual accounts and the annual return to OSCR.

The post is an opportunity to contribute to a lively and forward-thinking organisation in the Museum sector. The charitable sector management experience will be widely sought after.

Experience required

• An eye for numbers related to immediate and long-term practical meanings;
• Willing to be trained in XERO accounting software (or previous knowledge);
• Ability to explain accounts to non-financial Trustees and others.
• Experience in the sourcing and management of funds.

Yes, if on rare occasions of business travel. Otherwise not expected.

Trustee training available.

Frequency & commitment

Hours as needed with an expected average of less than 5 hours per week. A minimum of one year commitment with a preference for three years.
