Restart Orkney receives a large amount of donated bicycles, many of which are required to be repaired / refurbished and safety checked before being sold on. Due to increasing volume of donations they have a volunteering opportunity for someone to help check and repair / refurbish these items.

Key activities include:
• Visual inspection of bicycles;
• Assess condition (frame, brakes, gears, chain, wheels, pedals etc.);
• Repair and refurbish if required;
• Final safety check and completing relevant documentation;
• Cleaning bikes and preparing for sale.

What could a volunteer gain from the experience:
• The opportunity to meet new people in a busy environment;
• Learn new skills and update existing skills;
• A rewarding way to get involved in a local charity with environmental aims to encourage and increase re-use and recycling, whilst also enabling people on low incomes to access quality, low cost bicycles.
• Pass on your skills to other volunteers and supported employees.

Experience required

- Previous experience repairing / refurbishing bicycles would be an advantage;
- Ability to follow set procedures with a precise, methodical approach;
- Ability to work independently using own initiative;
- Strong problem solving skills.
- A “knacky-handed” person!
