Could you help local rescue dogs in Orkney? Loving Homes Dog Rescue needs help with:

- Dog walking
- Gardening
- DIY and maintenance
- Background/admin support

We are a small team and every bit of help matters.

What could a volunteer gain from the experience:
As well as making a real difference to rescue dogs, volunteering can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for you too. It is a chance to be part of a friendly team, meet new people, build confidence, learn useful skills, and enjoy the feeling of doing something genuinely worthwhile for dogs who need care, safety, and a loving future.

Experience required

We are looking for volunteers who are kind, reliable, patient, and willing to be part of a supportive team. A calm and caring approach to dogs is important, along with the ability to follow instructions, use common sense, and work safely. Experience with dogs or animal care would be helpful, but is not essential, as guidance and support will be provided. Most importantly, we are looking for people with a genuine love of dogs, a positive attitude, and a willingness to help.

Training details

We want all volunteers to feel safe, supported, and confident in their role. Before getting started, volunteers will be given an introduction to the rescue, including a full safety tour of the grounds and clear guidance on how things work day to day. You will be shown how to move around the site safely, which areas to be aware of, and who to go to if you ever need help.

You will also receive guidance on how to safely handle and be around our dogs, including understanding their needs, using leads and equipment properly, and following the rescue’s routines and instructions. If your role involves walking dogs, we will explain how to do this safely and responsibly, including how to stay aware of your surroundings and help each dog remain calm and secure.

We will also cover safe conduct while on the rescue grounds, including kennel and gate safety, hygiene, and the importance of following team guidance at all times. Ongoing support will always be available, and no volunteer will be expected to manage things alone without advice or help.

Volunteers (aged 12-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity. Find out more
