Sunnybrae is a very sheltered housing community in the heart of Kirkwall, providing a safe, supportive and friendly environment for older people to live independently with support when needed. We pride ourselves on being a welcoming, vibrant community, where relationships and meaningful activities are at the heart of what we do.
We are looking for a volunteer to help us make the most of our extensive gardens, including newly developed raised beds and wheelchair-accessible planting areas.
The role would involve:
· Supporting the planting and maintenance of flowers, plants and vegetables;
· Working alongside our service users, encouraging them to get involved in gardening activities;
· Helping create an inviting and enjoyable outdoor space for everyone.
There is plenty of opportunity for creativity, and the volunteer would be encouraged to bring their own ideas and gradually help shape the design and use of our outdoor areas.
Experience required
We are looking for someone who:
· Has an interest in gardening, including growing flowers, plants or vegetables;
· Has some practical gardening skills (formal experience not essential);
· Has an interest in working alongside older people and supporting participation in activities;
· Is friendly, patient and enjoys being part of a community.
Training details
All volunteers will receive an induction, which includes Health and Safety, Confidentiality and an introduction to working with older and potentially vulnerable adults.
Ongoing support will be provided by the team.
