Birsay Heritage Trust is looking for a small number of new trustees to help support the future of its activities in Birsay.

Birsay Heritage Trust preserves and promotes the historical, cultural and natural heritage of the parish of Birsay. Its work includes caring for and developing Barony Mill, the HMS Tern airfield and the St Magnus Church, and running projects like the Birsay Whalebone replacement.

We have exciting projects running and are always looking for new ones. We can offer the opportunity to get involved in these at any level from running them to helping out as part of the team.

Our Trustees get involved in a range of projects and have the opportunity to see these through to completion. You could also help to run the day to day operation at our various sites like Barony Mill or HMS Tern. Working as part of our team you will work with enthusiastic individuals with experience in this type of activity.

Experience required

We are looking for people with an interest in local history, good judgement, and a willingness to play an active part in the work of the Trust. Trustees help shape the direction and long-term future of the Trust. We are looking for people who are willing to contribute ideas, offer practical support where appropriate, and would particularly welcome interest from people who would value the chance to use their experience in a meaningful way.

Travel expenses

Travel and subsistence expenses agreed in advance will be reimbursed.

Training details

Trustees will receive an induction pack and will be supported by an existing Trustee. Any specific training that may be required will be agreed and provided through the Trust. Efforts will be made to secure third party funding for training.

Frequency & commitment

We hold regular 6 weekly meetings which you would be expected to attend. Outside these meetings, the amount of time you devote to the Trust depends on you. We hope you will be so interested in the work you spend a lot of time doing it!

Volunteers (aged 12-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity. Find out more
