RNID in Communities Volunteer

As an RNID in Communities Volunteer, you will help raise awareness of hearing loss, tinnitus and deafness within local communities across Orkney. Volunteers will deliver talks and presentations to community groups and organisations, sharing information about RNID services, support available and ways people can get involved. You will also support people to take the RNID online hearing check and help them understand the next steps if further support is needed. In addition, volunteers will promote RNID Near You services, increase awareness of local support available and signpost people with hearing loss, tinnitus and people who are deaf to relevant information, services and community resources. No previous experience is required, as full training, resources and ongoing support will be provided.

Experience required

No previous experience is required, as full training and support will be provided. We are looking for friendly, reliable and confident communicators who are comfortable speaking to groups and engaging with people from a wide range of backgrounds. Volunteers should be dependable, willing to follow volunteer guidelines, health and safety procedures, and confidentiality requirements. We also value people who are inclusive, work well with others, and are enthusiastic about raising awareness of hearing loss, tinnitus and deafness within their local community. Most importantly, we are looking for people who want to make a positive difference in the lives of local people who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus.

Travel expenses

Travel expenses incurred while carrying out your volunteering role will be reimbursed in line with RNID's volunteer expenses policy.

Training details

You will receive a comprehensive induction and ongoing support to help you feel confident in your role. Volunteers complete essential training in safeguarding, data protection, equality and diversity, and health and safety. You will also receive training on delivering community talks and presentations, using RNID awareness resources, promoting RNID services, supporting people to complete the RNID online hearing check, and providing information and signposting to people who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus. Throughout your volunteering journey, you will receive ongoing guidance, resources and support from your RNID Near You Coordinator, who will be available to answer questions, provide advice and help you develop in your role.

Minimum age: 18

Frequency & commitment

2 hours per month dependent on bookings. Ad hoc - weekday mornings, afternoons or evenings.
