Could you help lead Voluntary Action Orkney into its next chapter?

Voluntary Action Orkney (VAO) is looking for a new Chair to lead our Board of Directors.
This is an opportunity to play an important part in the future of an organisation that works across Orkney to support charities, community groups, volunteers and voluntary organisations.

VAO provides practical support, develops volunteering, brings organisations and partners together and helps make sure the voice of Orkney's voluntary and community sector is heard.

We are beginning an exciting new phase. Our Strategic Plan for 2026–29 sets out our ambition for a resilient, inclusive Orkney where people and organisations work together to create stronger, connected and sustainable communities.

What would you do?
As Chair, you would help the Board provide strong and supportive leadership for VAO.

You would help us:
· keep focused on our purpose and future direction;
· make good, well-informed decisions;
· maintain strong governance and financial oversight;
· work effectively together as a Board;
· support a positive and constructive relationship between the Board and Chief Executive Officer;
· represent and champion VAO and the contribution of Orkney's voluntary and community sector.

VAO's Directors have responsibility for the organisation's activities, finances and future and work closely with the Chief Executive Officer on its strategic direction.

Experience required

You do not need to know everything.
We are looking for someone who can bring leadership, good judgement and a collaborative approach, and who shares our commitment to Orkney's communities.

You will be someone who:

· is comfortable asking questions and constructively challenging when needed;

Travel expenses

This is a voluntary, unpaid role. Reasonable expenses are reimbursed in line with VAO's expenses policy.

Training details

You will be working alongside a committed Board and staff team and will receive induction, training and ongoing support.

Restrictions

Minimum age: 18
The successful applicant must be willing to become a member of the PVG Scheme if VAO determines that the Chair role is, or becomes, a regulated role with children and/or protected adults.

Frequency & commitment

The Board meets quarterly. The Chair will also need some additional time for meeting preparation, occasional meetings and regular contact with the Chief Executive Officer. We are happy to discuss the expected commitment informally before you apply.
