The Scottish Council on Archives (SCA) is the charity that champions archives and records management across Scotland. We advocate for the sector, support its development, and help more people discover and use Scotland’s archives.

Nominations are now open for new trustees, to be elected at our Annual Members’ Meeting on 10th December 2026.

The role: trustees set SCA’s strategy, oversee its finances and governance, and support the Director and staff in delivering our work. The Board meets around 4 times a year, in person and online, with regular sub-committee work. The initial term is 3 years. The role is voluntary, and reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

Who we’re looking for: The majority of SCA trustees have come from the archives, records management, conservation and related heritage sectors, including people who have retired from the sector in the last three years. However, any member can put themselves forward to join the board.

How to stand:

You must be an SCA member. If you are not, you can join here. Membership is free. Please allow time for your application to be processed.
You need to be nominated in writing by two SCA members.
Complete the Nomination Form. It asks you to confirm that you are willing to serve and eligible to be a charity trustee, to declare any interests, and to give a short supporting statement (up to 150 words) on what you would bring to the Board. Your statement will be shared with members. For guidance on being a trustee, see the advice from the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) here.
What happens next: The Board reviews every nomination. Endorsed nominees will be circulated to members on 1 December, and the election will take place at the Annual Members’ Meeting on 10 December 2026

Deadline: to be included in the AMM papers, nominations should reach the SCA Director, John Pelan, j.pelan@scottisharchives.org.uk by 5pm on Wednesday 25th November 2026. Nominations received after this date, but no later than Thursday 3 December 2026, will still be considered.

For an informal conversation about the role, contact John Pelan at j.pelan@scottisharchives.org.uk
