Trefoil supports the interests of children and young people with special needs, including physical disability, caring obligations, other disadvantage or learning and psycho-social needs to foster their independence, confidence and assertiveness.

Key Criteria

Registered charities or nor-for-profit organisations with a turnover of less than £500,000 can apply for projects that help young people with additional support needs in Scotland. 

The types of projects Trefoil will consider include: 

  • education, health and social welfare promotion
  • team building activities
  • recreation with an educational element
  • therapeutic activities not core funded by the statutory authorities
  • new development and start up project costs

Their funding can cover the cost of: 

  • travel or accommodation for an event (e.g. to help athletes attend national training or compete in events, musicians attend events)
  • hiring of sessional skill in particular expertise (e.g. paying a musician or dance instructor to provide specific skills for an activity)
  • volunteer training (i.e. to train volunteers in the skills necessary to run/be involved in a particular activity
  • activity costs (e.g. cost of materials etc needed for particular activities). 

Trefoil do not fund overhead costs e.g., salaries or capital projects.

All applicant organisations must be able to demonstrate their financial propriety, solvency and two years of audited/independently inspected accounts.

Projects will only be considered if the beneficiaries are: 

  1. Based in Scotland or if the project benefits young Scottish people with additional support needs.
  2. All beneficiaries are young people with additional support needs.
