To Absent Friends is a people's festival of storytelling and remembrance that takes place across Scotland 1-7 November each year. Their small grants scheme offers grants of up to £275 to support organisations to participate.

Key Criteria

The festival offers an opportunity for communities to get together to remember people who have died. It is non-prescriptive. This means that groups can use the festival week in whatever way is most meaningful to them. Past events have included:

  • coffee mornings
  • poetry readings
  • guided walks
  • creative workshops
  • gardening activities
  • online sessions
  • events for families
  • remembrance dinners
  • and more

A To Absent Friends Wall, memory tree, or corner for reflection can make a big difference for people.

Events and activities can be big or small, in-person or online.

To help organisers, To Absent Friends have put together guides and templates to provide inspiration and information for people considering holding events during the festival, whether or not they are applying for a small grant. Visit the To Absent Friends website to view the guides and templates
