Get Ready to Volunteer (GRTV) is a course designed to give people the knowledge, confidence, and contacts to volunteer.
The course, which VAO runs in partnership with OIC’s Community Learning Development and Employability team, is delivered over 4 weeks, with an optional group volunteering activity in week 5.
Over the course participants:
- learn about the different ways volunteering benefits them and the community
- explore the different ways they can volunteer
- look into what volunteering opportunities are available in Orkney
- meet representatives and volunteers from local charities and organisations
The latest GRTV took place across September and October with 5 participants successfully completing the course. Everyone took part in the group volunteering activity where they visited the Gilbertson Day Centre and spent time with the service-users. They created a Gratitude Tree by drawing round the service-users hands and talking about what they were thankful for (pictured) and playing dominoes.
The 5 participants were awarded with a course completion certificate and those under 26 received an additional 10-hour Saltire Award certificate. Some of the participants have since gone on to volunteer with local organisations and others have been referred to VAO’s new Supported Volunteering service. You can find out more about the service on VAO’s website.
