VAO's Connect Project hosted a special lunch to celebrate the achievements of some of their incredible young volunteers on Monday 2 June 2025. The event which was held as part of Volunteers' Week 2025, was an opportunity to thank them for the valuable work they have done in the community. Friends and family were joined by invited guests to show their support.
Liam McArthur MSP spoke to the young volunteers, handed out certificates, and shared a few words of encouragement. He reminded everyone that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a real difference and that the young people's efforts were truly appreciated.
At Connect, they believe volunteering can build confidence and improve the heath and wellbeing of their young people. It helps them to pick up new skills, and feel connected within their community. Some have said that as a result they have become better at communicating, feel more comfortable speaking with the public and enjoy getting out of the house to spend time with others.
Over the past year, Connect's young volunteers have taken part in a wide range of activities. They have ran an intergenerational games group, helped with gardening at Arcadia Park, and supported local organisations like Mind-On, The Blide Trust, The Yard Nursery, and the Clan Cancer Support shop. They have also been involved with PAT testing, organising, and assisting at Restart (Employability Orkney).
Being able to see and hear the positive impact makes a huge difference to the young person. One regular visitor to Arcadia Park shared how much the space means to them. They said:
The park truly saved me. I’m so grateful to the volunteers who created it and keep it going.
An older member of the intergenerational group who attended the games sessions and spent time with the young people said the group was:
The highlight of my week.
Karen Mack, Connect Project Co-ordinator said:
We're very proud of all our young volunteers and look forward to seeing what they achieve next.
