Voluntary Action Orkney (VAO) is pleased to launch a new Easy Read service to help local groups and organisations make their information more accessible.
Easy Read uses clear language, pictures and a simple layout to make written information easier to understand. It was originally designed with and for people with a learning disability, but it is also be helpful for many other people including those:
- who have acquired brain injury
- with dyslexia
- with a hearing impairment whose first language is British Sign Language (BSL)
- who do not speak English as their first language
- who find reading difficult
- with cognitive impairments such as dementia
Morven Brooks, VAO Chief Executive said:
Clear and accessible information is essential if people are to take part fully in their communities. Through this new service, VAO hopes to support local groups and organisations to reach more people and make sure everyone has equal access to information.
This work reflects VAO’s wider mission ‘To support a thriving and dynamic voluntary and community sector that drives positive change, strengthens communities, and enhances quality of life through inclusive and sustainable initiatives.’
VAO staff have been trained by Disability Equality Scotland to provide the Easy Read service. The process is straight forward and includes opportunities for clients to review the document and provide feedback before the final Easy Read is shared as a PDF.
