For 10 years, VAO has supported the delivery of the Youth Philanthropy Initiative in Orkney’s secondary schools, with nearly £70,000 going into Orkney’s charitable sector as a result.
Run by The Wood Foundation, the Youth & Philanthropy Initiative (YPI), sees pupils work in teams to research social issues affecting their communities. They identify and connect with a local charity, create a presentation, and compete for a £3,000 grant for their chosen organisation.
VAO provide regional support for The Wood Foundation and help deliver the YPI programme in Orkney. This involves helping to launch the whole project in schools; organising two charities fairs where pupils have the chance to meet and learn from charity representatives; and facilitating and running the final showcase events, including the provision of a judging panel.
This year, Stromness Academy and Kirkwall Grammar School both celebrated 10 years of delivering YPI, while Westray, Stronsay, and Sanday Junior High Schools took part for the first time since 2016.
To be considered for the final prize, the teams need to demonstrate: a solid knowledge of their chosen social issue and charity; good engagement with the charity; a clear and solid business case, showing how the £3,000 will be used; and creativity in the delivery of their presentations. Similarly, for the charities to be eligible for the prize, they must be OSCR registered and show that the money will be spent here in Orkney.
Whilst all the charities involved hope for the cash prize, their primary reason for taking part each year is the opportunity to raise awareness of their work. At the same time the young people become aware of organisations and support services which they may require later in their lives.
The presentations this year were of a remarkable standard, demonstrating the thoughtfulness and maturity of the participants. Soma’s Light, the Peedie Retreat, and Westray Development Trust were this year’s winners, each receiving £3,000.
